Cwmbach Male Choir

Founded in the Heart of Aberdare - Queen of the Valleys

Phil Walters

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the passing of long time Vice President and friend of the choir Phil Walters. A solicitor and former Coroner for South Wales Phil was a well respected character in and around Aberdare. We send our condolences to his family.

Vocal Chords

The Choir recently took part in a major news series on RTE Lyric FM.Vocal Chords is a five part music documentary series for The Lyric Feature on RTÉ lyric fm presented by one of Ireland’s most acclaimed sean-nós singers Iarla Ó Lionáird.

In a global exploration Iarla explores the question whether singing is mankind’s primary means of communication and why we sing in both times of joy and sorrow.  In a vocal landscape from the sean nós tradition in Ireland, to the Zulu Mbube music of South Africa. Iarla talks to outstanding performers like Peter Gabriel, Sinéad O'Connor, Maria Pomianowska and, of course, Cwmbach Male Choir ,to uncover the story behind song, singing and the  unique vocal styles of the world.  This series takes listeners on a rich audio experience  while addressing the simple but vital question, ‘What happens when you sing and why do we sing?’

You can listen to the series by following this link http://www.rte.ie/radio and get more information on the making of the series here http://vocalchords.ie/ Please take the time to listen to the whole hour. In series 2 at 29 minutes in you can hear a particularly interesting piece about the Choir's relationship with Paul Robeson including an interview with our choristor Jack Palmer who sang with him in a concert for Africa Freedom Day in 1960. Our Vice Chairman Denzil Boaler also provides an interesting perspective on the relationship between mining in South Wales and The Choir. There is also a potted history of our very special relationship with Cenestra Male Choir in an interview with their charismatic leader Elijah Themba Madlopha

Another chance to see Cenestra and Cwmbach in October !

Tickets for The Coliseum concert are in short supply however you have another chance to see Cwmbach and Cenestra sing together.

Don't miss out on this opportunity and help a very worthwhile charity at the same time.

Malcolm Jones R.I.P.

The choir is very sad to annouce the sudden passing of Malcolm Jones. Malcolm was an integral part of the choir and served for over 50 years. A well respected gentleman, Malcolm had a keen sense of humour and contributed hugely to the baritone section and to the Choir overall. Malcolm was the life and soul of after-concert singsongs and was the man to be with on tours both home and overseas. We will miss him and choir life will not be quite the same without him. God Bless Malcom - Rest In Peace

Malcolm's funeral service will be held at 2.00pm on Wednesday 10th December at St.Winifreds, Heol Bryn Gwyn, Penywaun, Aberdare CF44 9BB then Llwydcoed Crematorium at 3.00pm. Refreshments are at Abercwmboi Rugby Club.
