Review of Cwmbach Male Choir at Wiltshire Music Centre - Reg Burnard
"They sing, they say, in the language of heaven; they are British born but by the grace of God (maintains a friend of mine) Welsh. It is a Welsh Male Voice Choir: Cwmbach to be precise. And you will not hear better this side of Eastern Europe. A programme, partly devoted to the fascinating link they had with Paul Robeson, was full of fervour, passion, glorious sound; in fact, everything Welsh.
They had an excellent narrator - again with Welsh clarity of diction and enunciation - and, in Andrew Quick, a musical director who had a firm yet sympathetic hold. The choir did not miss a beat, oft times a millisecond ahead of Quick - call that Welsh passion - and their tone was constatnt, golden, to the end.
Their discipline, so often nowadays considered unimportant, was impeccable: All hands by sides as they sang, all across the lap as they sat; no fiddle faddling, no distraction. Newbury's American Trilogy was fascinating; John Rutter's arrangement of When the Saints Go Marching In was quite captivating but, for sheer roundness of sound and precision, the items sung in Welsh were the cream of the evening !

"I run motivation and teambuilding courses and regularly bring young people from inner city areas of London and Birmingham to witness choir practice at Cwmback school. The young people tend to be of afro carribean and moslem background and are often dissafected youths from disadvantaged backgrounds. The theme of the courses are teamwork and they are visibally moved after hearing the choir. The choir highlight many aspects of teamwork. What wonderful harmony is produced by 60 men of differing ages from differing backgrounds when working as a team with a common goal. I.E. The Choir. The young people will probably never have the opportunity to witness such a concert again and I am sure the memory will live with them for years to come. The choir are always friendly and welcoming and always have a chat with the young people during their break. The choir are wonderful ambassadors for Wales and a credit to their area. "My family and I greatly enjoyed the singing at your concert last night in Malvern. I brought home a CD which I know will give me constant pleasure. My only negative comment would be that the junior performers (Hannah and Rachel)were given too many slots in the concert. Their standard of performance was high but a couple of pieces would have been adequate. This was a comment I heard made by several people in the hall. I can understand that the choir need regular breaks, but maybe two or three of the choir could have performed individually or in a group as the audience had primarily come to hear the singing. Taken as a whole however, we felt it was an evening well spent "

"I first heard you sing at a conference in Caerleon and I then heard you again at Salisbury with my husband for whom it was the first hearing. We are booked to hear you again in Keynsham and then I will be at Caerleon again this year. Does this mean I am a groupie?? My 14 year old daughter thinks so. The emotion in your songs and the wonderful harmonies and very obvious joy in just singing is especially noticeable when heard in a local pub too. Their coice of material was varied and very well received by all. I especially liked the show tunes. I alwys enjoy hearing how a choir treats music that is not traditional choir music. I belong to a mixed choir in Victoria and it was a pleasure for me to see how well the choir conducted themselves throughout their performance. The choir was very professional in deportment and their numerous entrances and exits from the stage were conducted with precision such that they were not a distrction to the audience. "Dear Sirs I am an amateur videographer and I am making a film about 2 great uncles that served with the 13th Welsh Battalion in WW1. Both were killed in action. They were Henry Hopkin and William Rees, both from Porth. The film, entirely for private use and exhibitions, is not intended for sale or profit. Contributors so far range from Triorchy Library Archives, The Welsh Regiment Museum, Imperial War Museum, Belgian and French historians and so on. The purpose of my writing to you is to ask if you have available any music CDs (I am prepared to purchase commercially given the references) of the male voice choir which could be used as a sound track on my film. This will give it great atmosphere and reflect the family roots of the subjects. Would you be able or prepared to override copyright for this? I would need a range of songs, or tunes, which would suit the subject matter. I plan to dedicate the film to the entire Rhondda casualty list and it may be relevant to have a copy of Men of Harlech for that closing section. I would appreciate you help in this and offer a credit to the choir on the film and a copy of the finished video.
